Sunday Dinner, September 7, 2008

I finalized my menu for Sunday Dinner this week as I sat down to type up this post. I've hemmed and hawed all day about what to cook but I think I've finally made up my mind.

After I get this posted I'm going to go make a big meatloaf and put it in the fridge. I'll put it in the oven as soon as I get home from church tomorrow and while it's baking I'll prepare the rest of our dinner.

I have some fresh garden green beans already cooked. They're in the fridge now so all I'll have to do is reheat them and season them with a little salt and bacon grease or oil.

I'm going to boil some potatoes but I won't cook them until I get home from church tomorrow. I can't stand reheated potatoes. I haven't decided if I'm going to mash them or just put a little butter, salt and pepper in them and make stewed potatoes. I'll take a poll tomorrow while they're cooking and ask if everyone would rather have mashed taters or stewed. Majority rules.

When I get my meatloaf made and installed in the fridge I'm going to make MARY@OWLHAVEN'S recipe for APPLE CRISP. The recipe makes 2 9x13 baking pans full so I'll bake one tonight and freeze one for later. I love that kind of recipe!

I'm also going to post it on MY RECIPE BLOG for future reference, both mine and yours.

So, to recap my menu: Homemade meatloaf, fresh garden green beans, either stewed or mashed potatoes, and apple crisp for dessert.

What are your plans for Sunday Dinner this week? Share your menu/plans in the comments if you'd like.My sisters Cecil and Sue came by early this afternoon and asked if Lamar and I would like to go eat lunch with them and just piddle the afternoon away. There was some mention of stopping at Kohl*s, a chain store that sells clothing and housewares, etc. after lunch, and also maybe going to the mall for a bit.

Asking me and Lamar if we'd like to go eat is akin to asking if we'd like to keep breathing, so of course we accepted. We went to Sho*guns again, a local Japanese/Thai restaurant. It's the kind of place where a chef cooks your food on a grill in front of you, in between setting the oil on fire and juggling cleavers, spatulas and raw eggs in the shell.

The show is fine, but I go there for the food, and it did not disappoint. I got a combination of steak, shrimp and chicken, which is served with fried rice and vegetables prepared on the grill in front of you. It was really good, and I couldn't eat all my food. I think that's the first time that's ever happened there. Either I wasn't as hungry as usual or the portions were more generous than usual. Maybe it was a combination of the two.

You also get a complimentary salad and soup with your meal. I don't know exactly what they put in their salad dressing but I really like it.

But the so-called "soup"...well that's a generous term for the clear hot liquid they bring you. It has dried mushrooms and a few chopped green chives or onion floating in it and it's pretty much flavorless.

I don't know if it's supposed to be chicken broth or what, but if it is they just wave a chicken over it and say a prayer. Or maybe a chicken ran through the hot water. There's sure not any evidence that a chicken was ever injured in the making of that soup.

After we left the restaurant we stopped at Kohl*s for a while. I stayed in the car and enjoyed the pleasant breeze and sunny, 73F afternoon while looking through a magazine. It's been a gorgeous day, and there's a definite feeling of Fall in the air.

From Kohl*s we went to the mall and I did my usual: got a book I've been reading every time I go there and sat in Barnes&Noble sipping a cup of Star*bucks coffee while I read. Another visit or 2 and I'll have that book read! It's a new hardback book and they want $26.99 for it or I'd just go ahead and buy it. I'll just wait until it comes out in paperback and get it for a fourth the price of the hardback. It's 8:30 pm and I need to go make a meatloaf and some apple crisps.

I hope everyone has a great remainder of your weekend. May God richly bless you by meeting all your needs, and may you have enough to share.

I am pretty sure that we will be there tomorrow for lunch. Jason's mouth is already watering for that meatloaf.

Hope you guys had a good day.

Love you and thank you again for letting us go on a date last night.

Okay...so if I get ready and leave right away and drive all night I will get there in time for dinner!

I vote for mashed potatoes please.

I made a big batch of chili tonight, so I might have that...or I might not. I'll have to see how I feel tomorrow after church. My hubby requested the chili today.
Your meal sure sounds good Diane!

Have a blessed Sunday!

Your meal sounds pretty darn good, and since you asked, I like mash potatoes please with little green onions in it.

What time will dinner be ready? I vote for mashed taters with my meatloaf!

You are so funny reading that book a little at a time at Barnes & Noble! That sounds like something I would do. I hate to spend that much money on a book I will read one time. I don't pay that much for a movie I would see one time so why would I pay that much for book?

I'm going to get up early in the morning and put a beef roast in the crock pot and cook it until it falls apart. Then I will add some veggies to make vegetable soup and let it cook for another hour or until I can't wait any longer! A skillet of cornbread and soup will be good tomorrow. It's going to be cooler - almost like fall tomorrow. I may even fix a blackberry cobbler.

Have a great Sunday with your family and eat some mashed taters for me!

Diane - that meatloaf sounds good. I think I will be slow cooking some ribs for dinner. TF has his birthday this coming Tuesday and we are trying to decide if we should celebrate it tomorrow with all of the kids or on Tuesday night with most of the kids......

We are having to watch another hurricane that looks like it will be coming our way.....I sure do hope "IKE" will shrivel up and just die or go somewhere away from me.

I wish I could go over to Barnes and Noble and just sit down and read....It sounds so relaxing!

Have a great Sunday dinner and a great week.

Your Sunday dinner sounds good, Diane, except for the meatloaf. I don't like beef, but I'll be there for the rest of the dinner especially the apple crisp. Sounds yummy.

How's your diabetes? Are you having any luck getting it under control? We are so happy with Ed's new doctor. Ed takes 3 insulin shots a day. We are hoping this new doctor can help him get his blood sugar under control.

Have a good Sunday, Diane

I shrieked with laughter re the soup too! I can just see the look on your face as you tasted it and thought about chickens not being harmed.
We are going to a shared luch withour friends today. It happens once a month and there will be about 40 people there. I have plenty of apples, so I am making Mary's Apple crisp too. It sounds delicious. It is all about using what i have! I am trying her 30 days of nothing but have yet to post about it. So far, so good.

Good, happy Sunday to you dear Diane! Your dinner menu sounds heavenly as always. I usually make ground turkey meat loaf. And I love it. Now that you mention meat loaf, I must make it sometime soon. I love it with mashed potatoes and gravy!

You say: "Asking me and Lamar if we'd like to go eat is akin to asking if we'd like to keep breathing, so of course we accepted." ---I had to laugh at that comment, 'cause that would be MY thoughts too.

But, but...you didn't say what book you're reading. I have to agree with you on waiting for the paperback. Unless it's a book that I want to go in our library, then it's a hardback. So, what are you perusing while in Starbucks?

I always love your Sunday dinner menus. Everything always sound so "homey" and yummy. We are having pot roast which I cook all day in the crock pot, mashed potatoes, gravy and some kind of veggie.

Hello Diane. I have been hungry for meatloaf with mashed potato's and gravy. After reading your menu I wish I was there to enjoy it with you. I guess I'll have to buy some ground beef and make my own. I love meatloaf sandwiches with catsup too.

Today I was at the memorial service for my friends son, Jesse. I have never seen so many people at a service before. Hundreds. It was a potluck although salmon and dungeness crab were provided and drinks were donated by a local beverage company.
I ate half a crab, a bit of delish macaroni salad, a small piece of barbequed salmon,a big strawberry, fry bread and some snicker salad. Then had a tiny piece of carrot cake and half a chocolate chip cookie.
I have never made stewed potatoes before. I will have to try it.
I hope you have had a wonderful week end and Pray the week ahead will bless you.
Love

Goodness. You didn't think much of that soup did you? I laughed out loud at your description of the chicken walking through it. LOL

Hope you have a wonderful new week, Diane.

I have read all your posts that I missed. You are one busy gal in the kitchen...making pickles and everything!!! Your menus sound so good. It's not much fun to cook for just me, so I don't cook much, anymore. If my daughter comes for Sunday dinner, then I will cook and bake a dessert.

Seems so good to get back in touch again! I will still have my son's cats here for another 10-14 days yet, so I don't know how I will ever catch up on my blog reading, but I am going to try and read as much as I can in my spare time! LOL

Anyhow, you know I love you and your blog!

Meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy...that's one of my favourite meals! If there's any leftovers, I'm comin' right over! hehe I cooked a roast pork, garden fresh potatoes, yellow string beans and carrots for our dinner last night.

Glad you were able to have a fun afternoon with Cecil and Sue:-) I'm not fond of Japanese/Thai food but it sounds like you really enjoyed your meal there...I'm still giggling at the "no chicken was harmed in the making of the soup"! LOL

I just read your previous post and had to smile because my daughter in law Wendy is somewhat like you, she can't stand any kind of sauce/gravy/syrup touching any of her other foods so if she's having pancakes with syrup, it must be on a separate plate from her eggs, bacon, etc. Same with gravy, it all has to be on separate plates!!

Hope you're doing well my friend! xoxo

Hi Diane - new to your blog, but loved reading your posts! I made meat loaf for my Sweet Hubby's birthday meal just this past week - mashed potatoes and gravy were a must! I think he likes meatloaf sandwiches the best though ;)

I'm a little late commenting on this post! But it sounds like your Sunday dinner was delicious. Meatloaf--YUM!!! I bet yours is delicious!

Your description of that soup is hilarious! It certainly sounds yucky!

I love that you'll hang out at Barnes and Noble and read the same book to finish it! That's so smart! I remember one cold winter day when I was living in Brooklyn my mom came to visit me and we needed something to do, outside my apartment. We headed for Barnes and Noble and spent the day in their cafe, playing Scrabble. Your description of reading there made me think of that winter day years ago.

Have a great week, Diane!

Love,
Sammy

We have one of those kinds of restaurants, too -- where they cook the food in front of you! It's more Japanese-themed; I always get some kind of chicken because I don't like seafood. They have the exact soup that you described! It does have a good taste though. My Mom and I are planning to go there sometime this week. I want to go for lunch because it's cheaper than dinner!

Enjoy your week!

Hi Diane,
Your Sunday dinner sounds yummy and I know how you must love having all your family together to share it.
That chicken soup sounded downright awful. I know your homemade must be worlds better!
Thanks for you love and prayers for C's family. They are much appreciated.

You inspired me..we had meatloaf last night!! Sunday dinner was fried chicken, rice pilaf, corn on the cob and green salad...and cantelope.
I am trying out a new recipe that I got (and saw cooked) at the taste of home cooking show on Saturday...it is sesame pork..I got some of the ingredients I didn't have on hand when I did my "big" shopping this afternoon..my mouth is watering just thinking about it..yum! I find I am making rice more often than potatoes these days. I used to do potatoes alot more.
It is raining and thundering and lightning-ing here tonight...I love it!!
have a great rest of the week!!

I'm going to go do a little bloghopping today in case we are given evacuation notice over the weekend.

I have a Thursday blog scheduled to post tonight at 5PM, and I have a special gift for you then.

Nothin' better than meatloaf, taters and gravy. I sure could go for some comfort food right now. Hope all is well with you and yours. Isn't this weather just wondrous? Better get to hobblin' out to pick more grapes before it rains.

Have a blessed week Diane. Hugs, Jen

mashed potatoes are the heart of any really good hearty meal. I love meatloaf too so sounds like you enjoyed a great time with your family.
Your recipies make me hungry, so guess I'd better start looking for something good to snack on since I already ate an early dinner tonight.

Diane,

Your Sunday dinner sounds wonderful. I can't remember what we had but yours sounds so much better.

I'm glad you and Lamar enjoyed dining out. The meal sounds great and I laughed at your description of the chicken soup. Sounds much like something my grandfather would have said.

Take care and I hope Ike doesn't send you any bad weather.

Blessings,
Mary

Gee, I don't know whether to respond about last Sunday's dinner or the one this Sunday since it is closer. What are you planning for this Sunday?

I was hanging out at B&N last Tuesday. It's nice to leave the house from time to time.

Hope all is well with you. Just noticed this is last week's post.

Anyhow, girls will be dining with us as far as I know so we'll have favorites. Baked chicken (almost like fried), broccoli, baked sweet potatoes, maybe a salad, and homemade date nut bread.

Orange jello with mandarin oranges in it for dessert? Probably.

Life is chaotic at the moment (when isn't it?). I'll try to get an email out today or tomorrow.

Hugs,
