Holiday Cooking, & Dodging Twisters....

Overwhelmed at Overwhelmed With Joy has a bloggy recipe exchange set for October 2nd. Click on the button to the left or the one in my sidebar for details. You can also get the code for the buttons if you'd like to place one in your sidebar and plug the event on your blog. If you leave her a request in her comments she'll email you the codes. I'm still pondering which recipes I want to post, but I'm looking forward to it.

If you live anywhere in the South or Midwest U.S. you are probably very familiar with that thing depicted to the left. Tornadoes, or twisters as they're sometimes called, are a fact of life here in Arkansas, especially in the Spring and the Fall. Yes, it is Fall right now, what a coincidence. Starting Friday morning at 7 am we had a brief round of tornadic thunderstorms, then a lull until early afternoon. About 3 pm the tornado warnings started again, and it wasn't so brief that time. They continued until after 11 pm, and I just checked at 12:15 am Saturday morning and the thunderstorms are still very active to our north in Southern Missouri. We were blessed that most of the tornadoes went north of us today and this evening, but we're expecting more through the day on Saturday and into the night Saturday night. The weather guys stayed on the air on our local ABC affiliate all evening. Thank you, Ryan Vaughan and Chris Castleman, among many others. At one time there were 9 counties under tornado warnings at one time. It came close to us, but we didn't even get a sprinkle this evening. Anybody who lives in the South and Midwest knows what twister weather is like, and we're experiencing that right now. It's almost 12:30 am and it's still 83*, and super windy. It just feels creepy outside...weird, strange. And my arthritis is aching something fierce, in places where I don't usually hurt. So, if I don't post anything or comment much tomorrow it may be because I'm in the bathtub with my pillow, weather radio, 2 cats and my hubby, praying for deliverance. I'm not scared of storms and I don't panic at all, but I have a healthy respect for tornadoes.

Lord willing and weather permitting, I'll be back tomorrow evening for my Sunday Dinner post. I really don't want to be one of those people they interview after the twister sucks up their house and destroys their little piece of the world.

Take care, y'all.

Hope y'all all stay safe. We're supposed to get some bad weather later this evening and I'm all for the thunder and lightning, but the heavy winds freak me out.

Oh Diane, that does sound frightening. I'll pray for protection for all of you. We're supposed to get thunder storms here overnight tonight, which I actually like, but I sure don't like that violent stuff. Take care and I'll keep checking on you.

Diane,
You'll be in my thoughts and prayers.
I wouldn't want to live around tornados, but then most people say they wouldn't want to live in CA where we get lots of earthquakes!
Guess we all bloom where we're planted!

That's the best word I can come up with to describe tornado weather - creepy. Most kinds of weather don't scare me but tornadoes terrify me. And I hate the way you can feel the heavy pressure in the air and it's so still and everything kind of looks greenish. I've spent losts of time huddling with my girls and pets in a dirt basement because we were under a tornado warning. Not out here in western Colorado. But definitely in southern Missouri and again in eastern Colorado. So believe me I know how you feel and I hope it all just stops soon.

I plan to participate in OW's Christmas recipe event. This one should be great - I love getting new holiday recipes.

You stay safe. I'll keep you in my prayers. xoxoxo

Oh hon, I'm there with ya...I will pray that all the nasty stuff just goes away...Here in the midwest we have to be a tough lot don't we? When that wierd heavy humid weather hits my left ankle hurts like ####! Like someone is stabbing it with a hot knife. Must be the pressure changes or something. Take it easy and hot long soaks in the bath always seem to help my aches and pains. I will be lifing you all in prayer to stay out of harm's way. xxooRose

Gosh, Diane, please be safe!! We are not known to have tornados over here but this summer quite a few small ones went through and it was terrifying. I wasn't home when one went through my backyard but it actually took the boat right off the trailer and it flew to the middle of the backyard and took my shed right off its foundation. Don't know how you guys do it over there, having tornados threatening all the time:-( You're in my prayers and I'll keep checking up on you too! Hugs xoxo

I was in the middle of this one, hiding in a closet on top of my two babies with a mattress over all of us.

It took out Jonesboro High School. The one in 1968 (the real killer) took out Nettleton.

I googled:

24. THE JONESBORO TORNADO OF MAY 27 IN 1973

THERE WERE THREE FATALITIES AT JONESBORO THIS TIME. THIS WAS THE MOST DAMAGING TORNADO IN ARKANSAS UP TO THAT TIME. SEVERAL OTHER TORNADOES OCCURRED IN THE STATE THAT DAY.

Sue doesn't realize that you're sitting on the New Madrid fault so you get the best of both. We had a fair sized quake when I lived there as well.

I always keep AR in my prayers during tornado season (most of the year).
