Sunday Dinner, November 16, 2008

I have to tell y'all, I'm busier than a one armed paper hanger tonight. My church is having an old fashioned harvest dinner for the noon meal Sunday and I'm in the midst of cooking for it.

I'm making homemade chicken and dressing so I've already boiled my chicken and made my cornbread. I'm waiting now for the chicken and cornbread to cool enough so that I don't burn my hands when I pick the chicken off the bones and crumble the cornbread for the dressing.

I'll make my dressing in my slow cooker ceramic crock and put it in the fridge overnight, then put it on to bake early in the morning. I'll put the crock into the base and plug it in on "Warm" at church until time to eat.

I'm also making candied sweet potatoes. I boiled the sweet potatoes whole with the skin on so I'm waiting for them to cool enough to peel them and cut them up. I'll go ahead and get them ready to bake, dotting them with butter and sprinkling them generously with brown sugar, but I'll refrigerate them overnight and bake them in the morning at the same time as the dressing so they'll still be warm for the noon meal at church.

While I'm on a sweet potato kick I might as well make it complete by making a couple of sweet potato pies.

And I think that's the menu for tomorrow. Well, that's my contribution to it anyway.

What's on the menu at your place for this Sunday's Dinner? Share your menu/plans in the comments if you'd like to participate this week. We're also dressing old fashioned and I've got to go see if I can dig out my bonnet from wherever I stashed it. A dear church friend loaned me a long skirt so I've also got to find a blouse to wear with it. I don't have anything particularly old fashioned but I'll do the best I can. I do have a black fringed shawl to wear that will go nicely with everything.

I don't have any old fashioned shoes. Old shoes, yes; old fashioned, no. I have some flat Mary Janes that will have to do. They're comfortable and at this stage of my life comfort comes before fashion, especially when it comes to an extended service at church.

We're having an old fashioned service with lighted kerosene lamps and lanterns, and an old fashioned song service before preaching. We'll have guitars, harmonicas, maybe some fiddles, and maybe some surprises from what I hear. I think JESSICA is playing the piano. No telling what kind of instruments they'll come up with.

It promises to be a memorable service and I'll try to get lots of pictures, not just to share here on the blog, but also to keep as a remembrance and to look back on in years to come.Oh, and by the way: Since I'm so busy cooking tonight for Sunday Dinner, this is what we had for supper tonight:I think my chicken, cornbread and sweet taters have cooled off enough to handle, so I'd better get busy.

Y'all have a great Sunday. May God meet all your needs, and may you have enough to share.

Sounds like a great day with the family of God. The food sounds good, too!

We've had the kids all week-end so Kristen could have a chance to do some needed catch-up at her house, so Sundah dinner will be very simple. I think it'll be meatloaf.

I'd like to see a photo of you all too. What a fun time.
I really don't have anything planned for dinner tomorrow. I had elk stew for lunch and veggie soup for supper today though. I think I'm due for a nice veggie salad but am getting hungry for some fried chicken. I try hard NOT to fry because it's so bad for the arteries, so I'll wait and see if I can come up with an alternative. Maybe baked....?
Have lots of fun tomorrow Diane and God bless all.
Love you

Well, I had a lazy day today but did cook supper....tomorrow will be a pot roast in the crock pot (I have one of the big ones) baked sweet potatoes, turnip greens and cornbread. I would rather have chicken with this meal but Steve would have a fit..we had chicken tonight..haha.
Have fun!!!

That sounds like so much fun, Diane. I can't wait to see the photos! We still have Harvest festivals here in the UK at our churches in October, usually followed by a lunch in the hall.
Lunch today.... I have not given it a thought. Probably some soup I think.

Try an accessorize with some jewelry. Like a cameo pin or something. LOL

Your Sunday dinner sounds heavenly. My dear man, Bud, he LOVES sweet potato pie.

And the expression "busy as a one armed paper hanger" is a favorite of mine. I use it all the time. So, that really made me giggle this morning.

Have a gorgeous, peaceful day, Diane!

That really sounds like fun. I love it when a church family gets together to have some fun and fellowship. The wide variety of foods is always a great thing, too!

I still don't have a clue as to what make for dinner, although I'm leaning toward making beef barley soup.

Have wonderful Sunday, and week!

If I were going to your dinner, I'd elbow my way to front of the line to make sure I got all of those delicious things you're making Diane. Yummy!
I love those kind of get-togethers. That's the thing I miss about being part of a small church. It's just like a big family sitting at the dnner table together. Enjoy every minute of it.

Happy Sunday hon!

What a fun, lovely way to fellowship and celebrate the Lord's harvest! Yes...pics are a must. I can see you Diane in 25 years with your great grandbabies beside you showing them how greatgrandma D. looked in the 'pioneer days'. Your offerings to the meal sound delicious hon! The last time I had a good slice of sweet potato pie Lyndon Johnson was prez. ( the really olden days) Wow does that sound yummy right now...Bet Lamar and you will be beamin' when Jessica plays the piano! How long has she played piano? That's so cool. Sweetie, you are such a blessing, as is your family and community. Much love to you and yours Diane...

Your old fashioned church service sounds really nice, Diane. I sure wouldn't have any problem coming up with something old fashioned to wear. I never buy new clothes, so all mine are old fashioned. And covered in dust too. LOL

I love your chicken and dressing. As I recall from when I made it, it feeds an army!

Hope you have a nice new week,

xoxo

Your dinner sounds great, as usual. I really love hot dogs, too! I am curious how you serve the chicken since you said you took it off the bone - do you mix it with your dressing or mix it with gravy or what? I also did not know I could bake in my crockpot crock. A great idea.

Diane, I want to have Sunday dinner at your house every week - everything always sounds soooo good! Your comment about the "one-armed paper hanger" reminds me of the "busier than a one-legged man in a kickin' contest" - I used to work with an older gentleman who said that all the time, and every time he did, it made me laugh! Thanks to you, I'm laughing again!

I hope you enjoyed your Sunday dinner, and the fellowship at church.

I love these kinds of church pot lucks. Ours used to do one the first Friday of each month but they stopped. :(

You're gonna have to tell us how you make chicken & dressing in the crockpot. Sounds like a good trick to know!

Hope your Sunday services were truly special!

I don't think my wardrobe would be fashionable in any time period. I go for comfort.

I love everything you had for last Sunday's dinner, Diane. Sweet potato pie, my favorite, and corn bread dressing can't be beat.

I've been AWOL for the past several days. Just can't seem to get my life organized, but I did post for today. Hope you have time for a visit.
