Sunday Dinner, September 21, 2008

Remember Sunday before last when I posted my menu? And then we ended up going out for Mexican instead of me cooking? And I felt like a fraud because I had said I was cooking meatloaf for Sunday Dinner and then I didn't actually cook it?

Well. Let's try this again.

I have my meatloaf thawed out and ready to cook. My garden green beans are thawing as I type this. If all goes as planned, I'm going to make some homemade mashed potatoes to serve along with the meatloaf and green beans.

Hubby Lamar doesn't like meatloaf, so he's having leftover HOMEMADE RED BEANS & RICE for his entree, along with the green beans and mashed potatoes.

I'm also going to make a blueberry crisp, following THIS RECIPE, but leaving out the cinnamon. The blueberries are from my freezer, courtesy of my sister DONNA.

So, assuming my plans aren't changed again, my menu for this Sunday Dinner:

Meatloaf with ketchup over the top
Garden green beans seasoned with a dab of bacon grease
Homemade mashed taters
Blueberry crisp for dessert

What's in the works for YOUR Sunday Dinner? Share your plans/menu in the comments if you'd like to participate this week.Even though we've been experiencing Autumn weather for nearly a month now, the official first day of Fall is Monday, September 22. Because of the extremely wet Spring we had, all the crops went into the ground late, so harvest is later than usual this year.

In a few weeks or so harvest will be in full swing and will catch up to the mild Fall temperatures we've been having. I've already smelled someone's burning leaves and it won't be long before it'll be cool enough in the mornings for a fire for those who are fortunate enough to have a fireplace or wood stove. I love the smell of wood smoke from a fireplace or stove, and Autumn marshmallow and weinie roasts are one of my dearest traditions.

Can you tell Fall is my favorite season? Followed very closely by Winter.

I'll probably change my template to a Fall theme sometime in the next couple of days. I haven't decided if I'm going to use the same crabapple header I used last year, or if I'm going make up a new one. I still have a blueberry crisp to make and I'm putting together an afghan for gift, so I'm going to get my blueberry crisp in the oven and crochet while it bakes. I'll be back in a bit to read and comment some more before bed time.

Ya'll have a great Sunday. May God bless you with all you need, and enough to share.

I don't know what lunch or dinner tomorrow will be but tonight we went with friends to the local Eagles Club for prime rib dinners. They are large enough that Pat & I can split one, along with buying an extra salad, had both have plenty to eat, all for about $18. Good food, good price, good company.

Diane,

Your Sunday dinner meatloaf sounds delicious. I always enjoy hearing about what you're going to serve.

I'm not sure what we're having yet. Hubby said since it's a nice day he may BBQ. I have new pototoes to fry up and then something for a vegetable. I might even get up the gumption to make some homemade biscuits for a change.

I enjoyed visiting with you, as always.
Blessings,
Mary

I haven't made a meatloaf for ages...Hmmmm... I must make one soon!

I am out to lunch today with friends. The house is very quiet with David finally off at uni. After 32 years, I have no-one to cook for! I will, however, recover from the shock soon.

Mmmmmmmmmmm :::rubbing my tummy...that is empty right now, by the way::: Blueberry crisp!!! Delectable.

I've never met a man that didn't like meatloaf [Don't let your meat loaf! HA!!] So, Lamar is the first one. But hey...the red beans and rice sounds good too.

Have a glorious Sunday dear Diane. Hope your day treats you well.

For our dinner tonight, I was thinking of sausage and egg sandwiches...but, I just may make that for our breakfast instead. LOL

I have some blueberries in the freezer, and should make the crisp - I don't have a dessert planned - usually just get out the ice cream and cookies if anyone wants any. I'm fortunate that everyone likes my meat loaf, so I fix it fairly often.

But this morning I have a pot roast in the oven with some really fun-shaped carrots from our garden that the kids should get a kick out of (I almost always have Kristen and the girls over for dinner - I'd like a little break sometimes, but it helps her out so much). I'll mash potatoes (probably from a box this time) because that's what the girls like best. Then I'm going to cut up and cook some fresh green beans and some asparagus after church. I'll cut up some of our yummy garden tomatoes and that'll be it.

Diane, I don't know what we will be fixin' for dinner tonight. I have been cooking on a single burner butane stove since the hurricane. The power is still out so I will have to be creative with dinner tonight. Maybe I'll fix some fried spam and porkin' beans again. I have been cooking in my cast iron skillet and having a blast with it.

I bought a cantaloupe at WalMart yesterday and we ate that for breakfast this morning. I like your crisp recipe and I will give it a try when I get my power back and I can bake again.

We have plenty of nice Oak out in the neighborhood right now that would make some good fire wood. I have suggested, to our scout master, that the boys collect the wood and then sell it to earn funds for their scout troop.

Have a good week!

Sounds like a great meal, as usual! Blueberry crisp sounds amazing!

I'm a bit sick right now, so I don't think dinner is going to be anything exciting around here. All I really want to do is drink ice water. Ugh.

I love fall too! It's definitely my favorite! I feel so cozy when the weather starts to cool off and the leaves begin to change.

Happy Fall, my friend!

See, Diane, you did most of the work last week for your Sunday dinner, which made it easier on you today. I hope you all enjoyed the fruits of your labor.

Fall is my favorite time of the year. Also, Winter is my next favorite. So you and I have that in common. You don't find many people who likes Winter. The only thing I don't like about it is the way I get shocked all the time from the cold.

Sounds like a yummy meal. Bill loves meatloaf and I have some in the freezer from the last time I made it. Your blueberry crisp sounds delish!
We're going to the kids for dinner tonight and I made dessert. Not sure what's on her menu, but I know we'll enjoy it.
Have a great week my friend, and I hope you continue to feel a bit better each day!
love and ((hugs))

I tried making a meat loaf with ground turkey and it just wasn't the same. I want to do it with regular old ground beef, but lean beef. I like a little nutmeg and cumin in mine too and like you it must have catsup on top!
Today I am having a veggie salad and some lima beans and ham I have frozen.I have some chicken already baked so might toss some of that on the plate too, maybe in the salad. Then top it with Honey mustard dressing. I'm not in the mood for dessert, but if I need something later, I have some all fruit popcicles in the freezer.
My dinner sure doesn't sound very exciting but it will be easy.
Blessed Sunday to you Diane.

Hi Diane, by now your dinner is over, and there's probably no more blueberry crisp which I was going to invite myself over to have. Darn, I'll have to make it myself! It sounds so good.
We were in Phoenix (2 hr. S.) celebrating my mil 80th b.d. Yesterday was cold cuts and lots of salads. I brought homemade salsa and deviled eggs. so today was leftovers, and there were plenty.
I have succombed to Fall--I really do enjoy it--and even put up some fall decor.
Hope you're beginning to feel better.
God bless,
Brenda :)

Last night we cooked burgers on the grill, last hurrah goodbye to summer, but this morning I'm still worn out from all the weekend work, so I'm just going to steal your menu and make it - meatloaf (hubby loves it!), mashed potatoes, green beans, fresh sliced tomatoes and blueberry crisp - thank you Diane!

How funny! When K gets back we are supposed to go blueberry hunting(Friday or Saturday) so your blueberry crisp is right on target(insert Twilight Zone theme song here!)
Have a great week and keep us posted.
Love, Vikki :)

BTW. Is your meatloaf on your recipe blog? I love meatloaf and everyone makes a little bit different.

Happy first day of fall, Diane. It's definitely in the air here, too. I made a big pot of beef stew for Sunday dinner at our place.

It's my favorite time of year, too. The A/C is off and my doors are open. I love it!

Diane,

I just read your post about the trip to Red Lobster. I have crossed the old bridge. We traveled to Arkansas in 2005 and went through Tennessee and across the Mississippi via that bridge. Thanks for the memories.

Yes, I believe they are cormorants. Thanks. That was driving me crazy.

Blessing for a great week and be sure to enjoy the fall.

We enjoyed a late Sunday brunch here at the house with my folks and our youngest son, Matthew as well as his girlfriend, Stefanie...Chicken salad, whole wheat orzo with pistachios and cranberries with a pear/balsamic dressing, broccoli slaw, sliced tomatoes, red leaf lettuce and a variety of breads if anyone wanted a sandwich. Blueberry banana bread and coffee for dessert.

And shortly after my folks had left, I called my Sweet Hubby's oncologist and we met him at the hospital. Where we've been ever since...just got home about an hour ago. 4 pints of blood this time. But God is good and we're home again - hallelujah!!

Diane,
Yes it's time for you to feel good.
I hope you can still eat apple crisp.. it's a staple of fall don't you think?
We sure love it around here and in the summer it was peach crisp.
Easier than pie too.
Did you get to go camping this summer or fall? I remember you saying something about that after my hot camping trip in July?

I can't remember what I ate Sunday. Pathetic. That's what it is.

I'm coming to your house for dinner. I'll eat Lamar's share of the meatloaf. :o)

Don't faint now....but I cooked Sunday dinner this past Sunday! My kids and ex came so I made spaghetti and meatballs! We all love Italian dishes. Then I made a peach cobbler for dessert. I don't cook big meals much anymore, only when company comes.

Lamar doesn't like meatloaf? I wish I could have been at your table cause I love meatloaf! I always smother the top of mine with ketchup, too, and also onion and green pepper slices. We usually have scalloped potatoes with our meatloaf. It is interesting to hear what others fix for meals.

I am back and hope I can get caught up with everyone by the end of the weekend.

Hope you are feeling better soon. I believe you mentioned that you go the doctor on the 26th....that is today! I'll check back to see how you're doing!

Love you! (((((( HUGS ))))))

I've learned more and more we are two of a kind: I love the fall season too - the collar of golden beauty and the fresh, crisp air.

Sorry I haven't been around for a while - fall is a busy season too.

We're in Sweden this weekend and just relaxing so right now, just passed midnight Friday, we've even not planned whats on Sunday dinner

Wishing you a great end to your week :-)

Ah, but Diane I'm still allowed to wallow in denial of summer's passing since it's 104 degrees here still! Nevertheless, your kitchen is "Magic" and so are YOU my dear! :)
