Sunday Dinner, December 31, 2006

Hard to believe, but this will be my last Sunday Dinner post for 2006. The Year Of Our Lord, Two Thousand-Seven is fast approaching, yea, even at the door.

Sunday Dinner for us
will be comprised of pinto beans cooked in the crockpot with a hambone left over from Christmas Dinner, and cornbread. I also have some baloney for those who'd rather have a fried baloney sandwich than beans and cornbread. That's it. It's the end of the month and Christmas is just past. But to be honest, I might have made beans and cornbread even if we had steak in the freezer. I just like beans and cornbread occasionally.

My regular readers know the drill. What are your plans for Sunday Dinner? If you're cooking, what're you serving? If you're eating out or going to relatives' what are you eating? Share your plans in the comments. As far as New Year's Day Dinner, as of right now I have absolutely no idea what we're doing. I don't plan on cooking the traditional Southern New Year's Dinner, which consists of hog jowl, either fried or cooked in blackeyed peas, and greens. Since I have no idea who or how many will be here, the menu will depend a lot on those 2 factors.

The traditional story behind the meal as told around here in Arkansas is this: The hog jowl signifies blessings and good luck for the New Year, the blackeyed peas signify coins and the greens signify folding money. There are a lot of people who wouldn't dream of eating anything else on New Year's day. Some people are seriously fanatical about having hog jowl, blackeyed peas and greens for New Year's dinner.

Most people also serve cornbread with it. Because cornbread is good with peas and greens, not because of any tradition that I know of, but if you happen to know a
meaning for the cornbread, by all means share it in the comments.

This will probably be my last post of 2006, so I want to wish all my family and dear blog friends a very Happy 2007. May the coming New Year be filled with love and blessings for all of us.

We're going to have dinner with some friends tomorrow evening and I believe that grilled pork is on the menu and I don't know what else. I'm just glad I don't have to cook.

Happy New Year Diane. You've got an exciting 2007 coming up with that new grandbaby on the way!

Beans and cornbread sure sounds good to me but I am planning meatloaf and baked potato for dinner tomorrow. I'm not sure what veggies I will have with it. Maybe green beans and corn.

New Year's Day is my youngest brother's birthday so growing up, dinner was all about it being his birthday. I do remember that we had blackeyed peas for luck.

I have no plans at all for tomorrow. Today I think I'll make big omelets. I have a ton of eggs in the fridge.

I'm so excited for you about Peanut I can't stand it. I truly cannot wait to hear you try to express how you fee when the kids present you with that little bundle. What a treat you're in for.

Happy New Year, Diane. Meeting you in 2006 made it a nicer year and I look forward to a new year with you in my life.

Hey Diane! Happy New Year!! I am so happy to be "back in touch". We had a great week with our family visiting from N.C. - but I sure did miss everyone. And I am so hopelessly behind on reading and commenting.
Your day with Jessica sounds just great. I love to spend time with my Mom, and I love to spend time with my daughter. Isn't it good to live close enough to do that? We are blessed.
I don't know what we'll do tomorrow. I think it will be football and more football. I will just try to get caught up around here.
Have a great weekend.

We went to breakfast at 7:00 this morning with our son and daughter-in-law. It was a treat. Then on to church. They didn't come for lunch, but the others were with us for barbequed ribs, baked potatoes, veggies, and German chocolate cake. It was a good day. Now I will sleep through into the new year and take down my Christmas trees tomorrow while football games are playing.

Have a great day and "see you" next year!

Prime rib, but since I don't cook I can't say anything about how it is done. I am only an eater but I am pretty good at that.

Happy New Year to your and your growing family, too.

Everyone already knows I'm not the Martha Stewart clone my sister is, but Sunday dinner this time was even more pitiful for me - I didnt cook AT ALL. We were headed to a party and I whispered in my hubby's ear - eat a lot, this is it. Dinner. Don't come home hungry. He was sweet enough to oblige. Happy New Year Diane. xooxox
