Sunday Dinner, November 23, 2008 & Old Fashioned Day Pics

See the chicken on the serving dish in my Sunday Dinner button? That's a clue to what I'm making for this week's Sunday Dinner.

As of this minute the whole frozen chicken is still a poultry-sicle but it's thawing as I type this. Hopefully it will thaw enough so that I can cut it up and stew it later on this evening.

After the chicken parts cook and cool, I'll pick the meat from the bones and put it in a zip top bag. It'll stay overnight in the fridge until it's needed for Sunday Dinner.

I'll reserve the skin, fat and gristly (is "gristly" a word? It is now, I guess...) bits to feed Lamar's adopted outside tomcat.

Warning, rabbit trail: Yes, for once Lamar adopted a cat, not me. A big orange tabby tomcat, and I DO mean TOMcat, if you get my drift. He still has all his tomcat parts and some of his tomcat acquaintances have been showing up occasionally to eat what the orange tomcat couldn't gulp in one sitting, and then they all hang around and serenade us as they all debate who's the baddest tomcat in the 'hood.

Yay, us. We have a front row seat to the midnight tomcat concert, so to speak.

Uh, back to Sunday Dinner. Oh yes, chicken.....The chicken and broth will be used to make homemade chicken and rice. I'll cook the rice in the chicken broth when I get home from church tomorrow. Just as the rice is getting done I'll add the chicken so it can get hot and all the flavors can meld.

I'm also going to make one of my Mama's classic combos for Sunday Dinner. I haven't made it in several years but it still stands out in my mind as one of my favorite dishes that Mama made when we were growing up.

There's no fancy name for it, and it's not a fancy recipe. It's boiled potatoes with white sauce. I'll peel, quarter and boil my potatoes when I get home from church. While the potatoes and rice are cooking I'll make a batch of basic white sauce, which is butter and flour cooked together in a sauce pot for a few minutes, then milk is added and it thickens. Add some salt and black pepper to taste and you've got some good stuff, and it's really good over boiled potatoes.

I know all my sisters have some great memories of eating Mama's potatoes and white sauce.

I don't know who or how many will be here for dinner so these dishes are easy to adjust for portions. Add more or less rice and taters, open a couple of cans of veggies if needed and so on.

That's my menu for Sunday Dinner this week. What're your plans for Sunday Dinner? Share your plans/menu in the comments if you'd like.

NEWSFLASH---MY SISTER MARTHA CALLED JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO POST THIS AND SHE'S BRINGING A WHOLE SMOKED PORK BOSTON BUTT FOR SUNDAY DINNER!! IT'S ALREADY COOKED SO WE'LL JUST SLICE IT AND HEAT IT IN THE OVEN, THEN MAKE SANDWICHES WITH BARBECUE SAUCE AND MAYBE SLAW TO GO WITH IT.

But hold that thought. I'll probably make the chicken and rice, potatoes and white sauce next Sunday. We'll see.Now some pictures.

These of Jessica and Emmy were taken about 2 weeks
ago at church. Emmy loves the piano and tries
to sing along with us as we're singing.
I love this profile shot of Jessica and Emmy. And does this not melt your heart?
Daddy's strong arms cradling delicate
little Emmy as she sleeps with not
a care in the world.I'm just going to add some random pics from
our old fashioned day at church last
Sunday without adding captions.
I think they're pretty self-explanatory.
Our Pastor.....And his wife. And I think that'll do it for tonight.
Y'all have a great Sunday.
May God bless you with all you need and enough to share.

Our church recently had an old fashioned day. What fun to see all the bonnets and skinny bow-ties. I opted to wear my usual attire because, according to my kids, my whole wardrobe is outdated.

Have a blessed Lord's day!

Sounds like your Sunday meal is going to be great! We're going into the city to meet some friends for brunch, so I guess that will be our big meal of the day.

I love the photos of Jess and Emmy at the piano. I'd love to hear her play sometime.

Old Fashioned Day looks like it was a lot of fun. You look stunning in your bonnet! :-)

The photo of Jason and Emmy is just precious. What a sweet Papa.

Have a wonderful Sunday, Diane!

Hugs,
Sammy

How great that you don't have to cook after all! We're having simply spaghetti and French bread with cookies and ice cream for dessert. It's simple because we're having our annual Thanksgiving dinner in the late afternoon. I'm making crescent rolls and a corn pudding to bring.

I'm glad you enjoyed the pictures of the end of our vacation. According to Nancy (Daily Blessings), that was about the peak of the color in the mountains. The pictures didn't turn out as bright as it really looked. But they're good for memories!

Me again - are those pictures of Emmy and Jessica taken during congregational singing? How cute!

Did you notice that Kristen has a new post? Check it out - she needs all the encouragement she can get!

What a hoot your 'old fashioned' Sunday had to be!
Love the pics especially the one of Emmy and her daddy.
We're going to early service in the morning so I'll be able to round up dinner after church, cuz I'm ready for bed and don't feel like prepping anything. Honey-nut chicken stir-fry tossed with whole wheat spaghetti noodles is what we're having.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family...including the Toms!
God bless,
Brenda :)

I've mentioned before that our church has a pot luck every Sunday. We LOVE eating with our church family! Tomorrow's theme is Soup an Sandwiches, so I'm taking sandwich fixin's: ham, white American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and croissants.

We use an online signup that my husband put together, so we can know what other folks are bringing. It's quite handy.

Hi, Diane! I just love all of your pictures. Old-fashioned day must have been a hoot.

The pictures of Emmy and her Mommy and Daddy are precious. I'm still thinking and putting a good word here and there for them. I'm sure that the Good Lord has something perfect in mind for them. ;0)

Have a beautiful Sunday! Thanks for checking in on me. I sure enjoy your comments. They make me smile.

Nothing like a change of plans! I am out for lunch today, Diana - we are having gammon roast with meditarranean veg and then chocloate pie. I am drooling as I speak.

I cleaned out the cupboards, and appear to have 25 bags of pasta. I will not starve quite clearly!

MightyMom said...

well, that sounds an awful lot like not quite mashed potatoes and gravy to me...but I'll bet it good no matter what it's called.

aaaahhhh a tomcat chorus. nothing like a nice relaxing sound to help you relax

nothing like it at all is it??

MightyMom said...

oh and how is Ms Emmy?? those biopsies come out good?

Your bonnet is too cute Diane. :-) And the photos of Jessica and Emmy are so sweet, but the one of her asleep in Daddy's lap is a real heart grabber.

I'm making a double batch of lasagna. With Mandy and Aaron arriving Wednesday night and Thanksgiving dinner not happening until Saturday, it'll be nice to have something as different from turkey as possible on hand. Easy to heat up, too, so Sunday dinner is lasagna and so's dinner whenever I look up and have a houseful, later this week!

Fabulous photos today Diane!!! Loved each and every ONE of them! Now you had my mouth and brain all set to say I will come over for some of those potatoes in white sauce and the chicken and rice [some of my favorite foods here!!!] and now you're having roast pork?!! Okay, I'll come over for that too. With BBQ sauce and cole slaw?!! Oh yes indeedy!!

I got the biggest kick out of this that you posted: "serenade us as they all debate who's the baddest tomcat in the 'hood." [especially the 'hood part!] Too too funny. Made me giggle out loud. I do love to have humor.

My Sunday post is about the Ranch hand breakfast at America's largest cattle ranch from yesterday. Part one tho...it's gonna take a few days to get it all written up.

Have a glorious Sunday.

As always, your Sunday dinner sounds wonderful, even if you don't end up having your chicken until next Sunday!

I'll be making meatloaf with mashed potatoes, gravy and green beans. Comfort food is the best, isn't it?

Great pictures of your cutie pie grand-baby!

Your old fashioned Church dress up looks like it was a lot of fun. I like your bonnet!!
And your pictures of Emmy singing with her mama are just precious.

Isn't it fun when our dinner plans get changed so fast? LOL.
I want to try making Chicken and rice like you said. I bet it's really tasty. DO you put anything else in it?

Today I finally broke down and gave into that craving I've had for weeks. Yep, I fried me some chicken. I used skinless breast so it isn't too 'unhealthy' I also steamed some lovely cauliflower then made some carrot and celery sticks to top it all off. It was actually a pretty healthy dinner.
Of course I won't say much about the two big hunks of homemade fudge that came marching up to me, pried my mouth open jumped in and then manulapated my jaws to make me chew it. "It had walnuts in it too) otherwise it would have just melted it's way into my belly.
So that was my dinner.
I took my dogs for a little walk this afternoon so maybe that will make up for the fudge. At least one piece...

I hope you had a wonderful week end Diane and I pray your week is totally blessed.
Love

Diane, I've had those potatoes and they are just the best! My mom called them "creamed potatoes" and we had them often. We also had creamed peas, creamed corn, and a lot of other "creamed" dishes - so I think she liked that butter and flour mixture!

Diane,

The chicken sounded delicious, but so does the pork. The chicken can always be eaten at a later date. How nice of your sister to bring the pork. I'm sure it was a welcome break for you.

The photos of Jessica and Emmy are delightful. That little girl is going to grow up to love music.

Thanks so much on your kind and loving words on the passing of Aunt May. Your love, support and friendship are greatly appreciated.

Blessings,
Mary
