Sunday Dinner, May 25, 2008 & Some Pics

If you looked at my Sunday Dinner button for this week and thought to yourself, "Diane's cooking pinto beans again for Sunday Dinner," well, you'd be absolutely correct and they're simmering away on the stove as I type this.

Cecil and Ducky went in together to buy a smoked pork Boston butt for Sunday Dinner this week, so after we get home from church we'll slice it thin and put in the oven to warm up while the beans are warming on the stove top. They're bringing buns and barbecue sauce and everyone will assemble sandwiches from the hot smoked pork, and I'm making homemade slaw to go with everything. Some of us like our slaw on our barbecue sandwiches, some like it alongside, and others don't eat it at all.

What's that you say? You've never eaten slaw on your barbecue pork sandwich? You've never even heard of such? Why, you don't know what you're missing out on, my friend! And if you're sitting there in front of your computer thinking, "Blech!!", well at least try it before you condemn us slaw-on-our-bbq-sandwich-lovers.

So, what's your menu/plan for Sunday Dinner this week? If you want to participate, share your thoughts in the comments.Ducky's son and daughter in law, Danny and Mikki, invited us over to their home for a catfish dinner this afternoon. They also had one of those smoked Boston butts sliced for sandwiches, French fries, baked beans, sliced onion and pickles, and for dessert, fresh strawberries with strawberry glaze and short cakes, and Ducky made a pineapple 3 layer delight. Everything was delicious!

Danny caught the catfish on a recent fishing trip and was kind enough to share them with me, Lamar, Ducky (Danny's Mom) Cecil, Shelly, Marty and Genna (Danny's sister, her hubby and their daughter) Jessica, Jason, Justin (Jason's younger brother) and Emmy, and Danny and Mikki's friends, Johnny and Carrie.

I took a lot of pictures of Danny and Mikki's son, Seth, and Emmy playing outside. They had a little kiddie pool and a play table that you fill with water for Seth and Emmy to play with, but to be honest the so-called adults played with the water table more than the kids did! Emmy and Seth are still just a little too young to appreciate the water table, but it won't be long before they'll get the hang of it.

I took some pics of Jessica and Cecil, and Cecil took some of me and Jessica, and Jessica took some of me and Cecil. Confused yet? I think I took the rest of them.

I think this one of Cecil and Jessica turned
out pretty good, and the light was good for
taking pictures outside today.Me and Cecil.
Me and Jessica.Ain't Emmy a cool surfer girl
with her snazzy shades?
The bucket's bigger than Emmy!
Baby wedgie!Seth and Emmy playing with the water
table as their adoring fans look on.Emmy spent as much time crawling in and
out of the pool as she spent in it.Do you think Emmy's having a good time?Seth's in his little push car. Emmy seems to
be saying, "Here, let me help you with that!"
And of course I can't let the occasion pass without recognizing Memorial Day and what it means to all of us. In loving memory of all who've gone on before, and in special appreciation of all those who gave their lives in defense of life and liberty for those of us in the U.S.A. and all over the world.May God richly bless you by meeting all your needs, and may you have enough to share.

Y'all have a great Memorial Day weekend.

WEll, we are going to have hot dogs for dinner Sunday night. I am going to cook a brisket on Monday, along with potato salad and cole slaw and whatever else I can come up with. Enjoy your pork sandwiches and beans.....

I think Emily is a water baby...lol She and Seth will probably be best of friends forever.

Thanks for the Memorial Day reminder...Actually I have been think about it for three days now. My dad was in the Navy and he was very proud to have served his country.....Yes, I'm thinking abou him again.....

Your Sunday dinner sounds yummy and here we always have coleslaw on our BBQ sandwiches!! (we like baked beans on the side too!)
Our Memorial Day picnic is Sunday (if the weather clears up, we'll eat outside, otherwise it's inside for us)
For our Sunday dinner, I'm planning a chicken tortilla casserole, refried beans and salad.
Loved seeing all the happy faces. Emmy is just absolutely surrounded by love, just as she should be!
Have a great weekend..

Did I not pay attention and miss that Jessica cut her hair? It's lovely! Really fits her face. Up here in Pittsburgh they put fries on sandwiches, rather than coleslaw, or both! We're celebrating Memorial Day tomorrow with steaks on the grill, baked beans, corn on the cob, and coleslaw. And of course strawberry shortcake, while the strawberries are in season.

People look at me crazy when I put my slaw on my sandwich...but you're right...it is SO good that way. We used to get Couch's bbq growing up, but homemade is always best, I think!

We're going to have a big dinner tomorrow night. Burgers and brats on the grill, corn on the cob, baked beans, and other fixin's.

Enjoy your Sunday, Diane!

Down here in Texas they don't eat slaw on their barbecue sandwich. But, being from Arkansas, I think without slaw, it ain't barbecue!! Have a safe and wonderful Memorial Day!

Those two playing together are just as cute as can be, Diane. I love the baby wedgie. lol

Your dinner sounds wonderful. Not sure what we're doing but we're keeping it simple. I volunteered to watch the two little ones so Andy could use the Regal Cinemas gift card we gave him for his birthday last week - he's taking Kris to see the new Indiana Jones movie. So dinner at our place is going to be very toddler friendly but I suspect it will involve the grill since my kitchen counter is covered with Santa star parts. :-)

Happy weekend to you and yes, let's not forget those who gave everything that we might enjoy the freedoms we have.

Big hug,
Barb

I don't know what dinner will be today but am sure it will be good.

I'll echo you on the Memorial Day remembrances. A year ago Pat, her grandson and I were taken on a tour of my son's Navy ship but this year he is on shore duty and at a submarine base that has higher security so I don't think we will even try. And B isn't on a ship, he is sailing a desk.

I like slaw on my bar-b-q sandwiches. Maybe it's a Southern thing. Thanks for sharing all the fun time pictures with us, Diane.

The pictures are just great. Wonderful summery days with family. What could be better.

Diane,

I was lucky and didn't have to cook today. We had a small birthday party for Brandon who will turn 13 on Tuesday and we had a delicious BBQ and salads. And yes, I do like slaw on smoked pork. I also like it on hamburgers and foot longs.

Thanks for sharing the photos of your family. It's always nice to hear about family fun days.

Happy Memorial Day to you, my friend. I also give thanks to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

Blessings,
Mary

We have an annual family thing on Memorial Day, because my brother and SIL come up from Oklahoma so she can run in the Bolder Boulder 10K race. This year, they have to go back home immediately after the run, so we did it today. We had great weather, and tomorrow is supposed to be lousy, so this was perfect timing. But I thought it was at lunchtime and it was at 4:00. So right after church DC and I went to our favorite Chinese place. It's been a great day.

It must have been a nice warm day down there for the kiddoes to be able to play in the water like that.

Cole slaw and BBQ sandwiches sound good! Together or separate, either one!!

Our dinner was Johnsonville cheddar franks with my homemade chili topping (can't gag down that canned stuff), and we had chips with dip. Pretty simple but it was good.

Emmy sure enjoyed the pool! Looks like she and Seth had a grand time playing!!

Hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day Diane!!

Oh, I loved the pictures too!

The little Emma is such a sweetie! I can see by your photos that she is a certain favorite. As well she should be!

Hope your Monday is peaceful and serene. Have a great holiday.

I'm going to add you to my list, so I can come by again and again. I hope you don't mind.

Happy Memorial Day to you and yours, dear Diane! I do hope you've been having a fabulous long weekend. We don't celebrate it here in Canada but I know what an important holiday it is to my American friends:-) Our holiday to remember our war veterans is in November, Remembrance Day.

Nope, can't say I've ever had slaw on a barbecue pork sandwich but I bet you it's good...I'm comin' right over! hehe

Sounds like a wonderful time at Danny and Mikki's place, I so loved seeing all the pictures. I so love Jessica's haircut, makes her look so much younger:-) Hmmm, maybe I should get a haircut too! lol

Emmy looks precious with her snazzy shades! lol How adorable! I love the way she and Seth get along so well, they will certainly grow up being best friends as well as cousins!

It certainly must be nice to be able to get in the pool...I wouldn't know since it's still too cool here for that! lol We're supposed to get frost tonight...aaarrggghhhh! At least we had a beautiful weekend:-) xoxo

You know your Sunday dinner posts always makes my mouth watering. Slaw in a sandwich is great, but Catfish; just smashing. As a Norwegian, I love seafood you know, and this one is one of my fave.

Looks like you had a great time - thanks for sharing the pics and readable story - as always!

I can take slaw on everything myself! Love it!!! Your menu makes me hungry. When you live alone like I do, you don't really do much cooking just for yourself. Once in a while I cook a meal but not very often. I'll just dream of yours! LOL

Emmy is a little doll baby! She's a real cutie!!!

Enjoyed your post and waiting for the next one!

God bless you and yours!

Hey, Diane! What are you doing up so late??? LOL I see you commented on my blog a little bit ago. I've always been a night owl myself, so I don't go to bed til around 5!

Yes, family IS special, and we are really enjoying Ann and Lyle this week. They are such a lovely couple!!!I just wish they lived closer! We were out to dinner last evening, and it was so-oooo good!!!

Thanks for dropping by my blog! I love reading yours!!! I am still reading through your recipes! I have always been a recipe nut, but now I don't cook much unless my kids and ex come to dinner or company comes. I love to bake, though! See you after your next post! Hugs!

Thanks for stopping by.
And yes it is all about family and friends, isn't it?
Our daughter went to SF through our church to do mission work, and then stayed. She's been working as a social worker in a very lo income housing development. She decided to stay on in SF and go onto nursing school. So it will be at least 2 more years that she is there, etc. She's made many friends and now has a boyfriend there, but it's a long trip across country but she comes back 3-4 times a year and we try to go out too.
I know you feel blessed to live near your daughter and granddaughter and sisters.
Have a good evening.

I just had to come back and tell you that your pot of beans on the stove has inspired me. Yesterday, anyway. I cooked a big pot of pinto beans and ended up making from scratch --honey bbq'd beans for dinner. They were soooooo good! And I have to thank you for the inspiration.

Hubby thanks you too, as beans are a favorite of his. :o)
